! There is an on-going concern in many states and countries of the growing number of Elder Abuse reports to the department of social services. Last year, many reports of abuse, neglect or exploitation of elders were reported in North Carolina and unfortunately this included Iredell County. Experts believe that for every case reported in the US, 23 go unreported. It is crucial that we all bring awareness and be a voice for those who can’t speak for themselves. Typically each year the Governor of North Carolina signs a proclamation designating Mother’s Day through Father’s Day as “Vulnerable and Elder Abuse Awareness Month.” Like so, a proclamation is signed by the President of the United States proclaiming June 15 as “World Elder Abuse Awareness Day.” In an effort to help raise awareness in 2018, South Iredell Senior Center will hold a “Walk in Purple” awareness walk on Fri., June 15. The Senior Center is located in the lower level of the Charles Mack Citizen Center in downtown Mooresville. Anyone interested in joining the walk should meet in the lobby at the Senior Center at 10 a.m. Purple is the chosen color for bringing awareness to the campaign, so PLEASE WEAR PURPLE in order to highlight our efforts and draw attention to the cause. The outpouring of people participating in North Carolina, across the nation, and as far away as Australia and Ireland, has been astounding in years past, so please help us to increase awareness in our own hometown of this serious problem.
